DEEP in the Media: Prof. Jörn Walter on the Importance and Future Perspectives of Epigenomic Research in Germany & Europe

In an article recently published by the German “Saarbrücker Zeitung” Prof. Jörn Walter, scientific coordinator of DEEP, shares his views on the current state of epigenomic research and the impact epigenetics has on modern-day medicine. Moreover, Walter outlines latest scientific achievements of the DEEP research teams and highlights the interplay between biology and informatics: “Epigenomics is digital biology and would not work without strong informatics.”

Apart from DEEP, Prof. Walter and his team at Saarland University are part of yet another multi-million project funded by the European Commission with almost 15 million Euro over the next five years. The new EU flagship project “SYSCID” aims to develop a personalised medicine approach for inflammatory bowel disease, rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus. It will be coordinated by Prof. Philip Rosenstiel from Kiel University, who is also member of DEEP, and will – among others – build on data generated within DEEP and IHEC.
